Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery (Dec. 26, 2006)

  UPDATED: 2007-01-12

After being nearly extinct in the late 1880's, hunted heavily for their fatty blubber, elephant seals are recovering, growing about 6% each year and moving northward to reoccupy historical colonies and create new ones along the US Pacific coast. It is estimated that their population is now between 120 and 150 thousand individuals.
