The Salton Sea, which is wide up to 15 miles and stretches for 35 miles along northwest/southeast axis, is the lowest part of the Colorado Desert: its current surface of about 376 square miles is 227 feet below mean sea level; its maximum depth is 51 feet; its total volume is 7.5 million acre-feet.
