THE World University Rankings.  The Times Higher Education World University Rankings (or THE World University Rankings) are annual world university rankings published by the British magazine Times Higher Education (THE) with data supplied by Thomson Reuters that provides citation database information. They include both the overall and the subject rankings. It is regarded to be one of the three most influential and widely observed international university rankings, along with the QS World University Rankings and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). The rankings of over four hundred universities is based on 13 separate performance indicators grouped under five categories: teaching (30 % of final score), research (30 %), citations (research impact, 32.5 %), international mix (5 %), industry income (2.5 %). Published for the first time in March 2011, the rankings are based on a survey of 13,388 academics over 131 countries - which is the largest evaluation of academic reputation to date.

Moreover, the additional World Reputation Rankings which are independent of the main rankings have also been released starting from 2011. As a spin-off of the annual World University Rankings, the reputation league table is based on nothing more than subjective judgement - but it is the considered expert judgement of senior, published academics - the people best placed to know the most about excellence in our universities.

Below are, side by side, main World University Rankings and World Reputation rankings for the top 50 universities on each list. In the middle, on a green background, are up (+) and down (-) moves from the left to the right list. While on the left list the placement distribution is rather smooth, the top six universities in the right list — Harvard, MIT, Cambridge, Oxford, UC Berkeley, and Stanford — were found to be "head and shoulders above the rest" and are globally recognized "super brands". No wonder, the right list is arguably the most influential.
