fruits,
after all
Our
apple cactus, also known as Peruvian apple (Cereus uruguayanus,
syn.Cereus peruvianus of gardens) this summer has produced
fruits for the first time, two of them, practically at the same
time. These ovoid, slightly ribbed, fleshy, red fruits were
surprise for us - the plant has been transplanted to Grabov Rat
from a location in the city of Bol eight years ago and every year,
from late spring to early fall, we enjoyed its beautiful
funnel-shaped flowers [ROLLOVER],
but no fruits although I’ve photo-documented several times honey
bees working on the flowers in early morning; they close in about
two hours after sunrise (see, for instance pg15T
and pg1JP).
Interestingly
enough, our apple cactus is rather old: before the transfer to
Grabov Rat, it was on a terrace in the city in a large flower pot
for over thirty years.
By
the time we from the web search realized that the fruits are
edible, they were self-opened and spoiled. Next year, maybe. |
