daylight time twist

A week ago, according to "spring forward" US regulations, I’ve adjusted the eleven clocks in the house (three of them on the kitchen appliances, two on the cameras) to the DST (Daylight Saving Time). To my content, I’m just one of more than 1.6 billion people doing that. Then, in two weeks time I’ll be in Croatia doing the same procedure - why there isn’t a global "spring forward"? Or, rather, why change the clock time any way?

It isn’t "daylight saving time" at all, we don’t control the daylight time, we don’t control the sun rising and setting. Twice a year, obeying "spring forward" and "fall back", we merely change our perspective of daylight time flow. Why we are doing it?

DST was introduced on the pretext that prolonged summer evening daylight saves energy, primarily electrical energy for the artificial illumination. Today we know that it’s quite the opposite: air conditioners and many outdoor devices used for pleasure in bright summer evenings actually increase the energy consumption. More importantly, statistics show an increase of traffic accidents and work injuries, as well as lower productivity at times immediately after the clock time change. Our daily routines, work and pleasure, are largely driven by clocks and our bodies do not immediately adjust to new clock time. We see substantial costs of DST, without any benefit. So, it’s time to abandon it.

DST was introduced at the height of industrial revolution. Maybe mankind arrogance toward Nature at the time nourished the notion that man can control everything, including the sun. It’s time to abandon DST.
