How educated is US ? According to the recently released version of the National Science Board's Science and Engineering Indicators report, total enrollment in US higher education has risen from 12.7 million in 1985 to 16.9 million in 2005, a 33.1% increase. More significantly, the number of associate, bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees in science and engineering has in the same time period risen by 39.6%, 45.0%, 97.7%, and 38.5%, respectively. While foreigners (tempo-rary residents) are minor participants at associate's and bachelor's levels (below 3%) and only a moderate factor at the master's (risen from 9.4% in 1985 to 12.8% in 2005), they are a respectable factor at the Ph.D. level (risen from 21.1% in 1985 to 35.6% in 2005).
