Croatian
neo-fascism
Nowadays,
when you visit city of Bol on the island of Brač,
Croatia, you won’t see the monument pictured on the right. It was
a monument dedica- ted to the citizens of Bol who died in the
anti-fascist liberation war 1941-1945. The monument is removed by
the resurfacing fascists. So was the bust of the leading
anti-fascist fighter Benko Matulić.
So was the plaque with the names of those who died in battle against
Italian and German occupiers and their local collaborators. The
local high school was renamed, guess why.
Croatian
neo-fascists, under the cover of anti-communism and with the
assistance of the politicized Croatian catholic church and sleep-
walking Croatian government, are doing well in their efforts to
revise the Balkan history of 1940's, Croatian history in particular.
They act openly, practically unopposed, and recently even with
some arrogance. For instance, just last week on June 22, the
memorial day of Croatian anti-fascist movement, one of the Croatian
bishops (the archibishop Bozanić kept a lower profile this time) gave a sermon
at the mass grave of "the innocent victims of communist
terror", actually a mass grave of the domestic fascists and
their collabo- rates liquidated in 1945. |
