Our agreement to downplay the differences that arose in the intervening years leading to the 50th anniversary of our high school graduation, presented last week (July 1, 2007), was obeyed pretty well during our meeting. However, our celebration was reported in the local newspaper, and the reporter either did not catch the philosophy of our meeting or he imposed his own viewpoint. Our lifetime achievements, particularly of those involved in politics, dominate in his report. As it happened, one of us was (is) strongly influenced by the Croatian post-World-War-II immigrants in Canada, and his statement "all my life I was demolishing Yugoslavia" unfortunately appeared in the report. Unfortunately, because as high school seniors we were politically insignificant and rather unseasoned. And we agreed to meet because of the years we spent together in high school, not because of the fifty years we were separated.
