Whose brains are they ? According to the recently released version of the National Science Board's Science and Engineering Indicators report, the number of postdocs at US universities rose from 22,387 in 1985 to 48,653 in 2005, a 117.3% increase. The percentage of postdocs who are foreign citizens at the same time has risen from 39.6% to 55.4%, mainly due to the increase in biological sciences (from 34.8% to 58.7%) and medical/life sciences (from 30.6% to 46.7%). Throughout this time period, foreign participation is particularly pronounced in physical sciences and engineering, 55 to 71%.
