hypsometry of the Brač population
It is my intention to visualize some of the Brač data, from the historical point of view in particular. As I’ve
showed earlier (grWeekly060924),
Brač population went through substantial variations but not all of
the settlements were equally effected. Currently I’m in search for
the data both, on individual settlements elevations and their
historical populations.
At
the same time I’m experimenting with various graphical
presentations suitable for the project. On the right is the
hypsometric plot of Brač population and corresponding
geographic area for the year 1948, based on Stanovništvo otoka
Brača by A. Bulić in the Brač Anthology (Brački
Zbornik, Vol. 3, Split 1957, p.119). The most populated were
coastal areas at elevations up to 100 m which encompass 21.6% of the
island’s geographic area and 65.2% of the island’s population.
The populous areas were up to 400 m, the elevation up to which
cultivated mediter- ranean plants could be grown.
By
the way, the percentages mentioned above (my calcu- lations)
are incorrectly calculated in the Brač Anthology. I
know, they didn’t use electronic calculators at that time but
(also at that time) I wouldn’t pass my highschool math with
calculations like those. |
