raceme : a variety of flower cluster (inflorescence) in which single flowers grow individually on short stalks arranged at equal intervals along an elongated stem, as in the lily of the valley.

botany & gardening

rachis : the axis or main stem of an inflorescence or of a compound leaf; a branch that proceeds nearly in a straight line from the base to the apex of a raceme.
radian (rad or rd) : the SI unit of plane angle, is the plane angle between two radii of a circle which cut off on the circumference an arc equal in length to the radius. Since the circumference of a circle is 2π times the radius, the complete plane angle about a point is 2π rad.

NOTE: The degree and its decimal submultiples can be used with the SI when the radian is not a convenient unit; by definition, 2π rad = 360o. The minute (1' = (1/60)o) and the second (1" = (1/60)') can also be used.

rancor : bitter feeling or ill will; the deepest malignity or spite; deep-seated enmity or malice; inveterate hatred.

botany & gardening

receptacle : the enlarged upper part of a stalk bearing a flower or an inflorescence.

adj.

reluctant : unwilling, grudging one's consent, opposed in mind.

economics

rent : the income accruing to the owner for the service of a durable good such as a piece of land or a property.

RGB : red, green, blue; see RGB color model, RGB color space

computing & web

RGB color model : an additive color model in which red, green, and blue light are the three primary colors. RGB is a convenient color model for computer graphics because the human visual system works in a way that is similar - though not quite identical - to an RGB color space. For the 24 bit color depth, each of RGB parameters (primary colors) can use a value ranging from 0 (no light, black) to 255 (full intensity of the colored light). For example, a bright red color might have an R value of 246, G value of 20, and B value of 50. Combining two additive primary colors in equal intensities produces the additive secondary colors cyan, magenta, and yellow. Combining all three primary lights (colors) in equal intensities produces a shade of gray; when the value of all three parameters is 255, the result is pure white; when all three parameters have values of 0, the result is pure black. Varying the full range of intensity of each light (color) eventually reveals the full gamut of those three lights (colors).

RGB color space : any additive color space based on the RGB color model; RGB spaces are specified by defining three primary colors and a white point. Note that the RGB color model itself does not define what exactly is meant by "red", "green" and "blue", so that actual color spaces can vary considerably. As of 2004, sRGB is by far the most commonly used RGB color space, particularly in consumer grade digital cameras, because it is considered adequate for most consumer applications, and its design simplifies previewing on the typical computer display. Adobe RGB, which has a significantly larger gamut than sRGB, is also being built into more medium-range digital cameras, and is favored by many professional graphic artists.

botany & gardening

rhizome : a creeping, underground stem, usually horizontally elongated, sending out roots from its lower surface and sending up leafy shoots or flowering stems from its upper surface.

geography : navigation

rhumb : a point of the compass; also a rhumb line.

geography : navigation

rhumb line (also called rhumb, loxodrome) : a curve on the surface of a sphere that cuts all meridians at the same angle. It is the path taken by a vessel or aircraft that maintains a constant compass direction.
riddle : a statement or question having a double or veiled meaning, put forth as a puzzle to be solved. Riddles are of two types: enigmas, which are problems generally expressed in metaphorical or allegorical language that require ingenuity and careful thinking for their solution, and conundrums, which are questions relying for their effects on punning in either the question or the answer.

botany & gardening

rind : a thick and firm outer coat or covering, as of certain fruits, cheeses, and meets: watermelon rind, orange rind, bacon rind; the bark of a tree.

Latin                         acronym

RIP : requiescat in pace : may he (or she) rest in peace

ripple : a small wave or series of waves.

petrology

rock : a consolidated aggregate, naturally occurring, of mineral grains consisting of one or more mineral species (minerals and/or mineraloids) and having some degree of chemical and mineralogic constancy. Rocks are classified by mineral and chemical composition; the texture of the constituent particles; and also by the processes that formed them.

popular

rock : a hard, compact object with some coherence, derived from the Earth’s solid components.
rookery : a colony of breeding animals. The term is most commonly applied to the nesting place of birds, such as the crow and rook, a bird similar to the crow, but smaller; it is also used to describe the breeding grounds of the penguin and seabirds in general. A rookery may also be a place where marine mammals such as the seal, sea lion, and walrus breed, give birth, and nurse their young, such as a beach or similar location. A turtle rookery is typically a beach where the adult female nests and buries her eggs.

botany & gardening

rosette : a circular cluster of leaves, petals, or other organs on an axis with very short internodes.

Internet lingo

ROTFL : rolling on the floor laughing

acronym

RTECS : Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances, by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

botany & gardening

runcinate : sharply incised or saw-toothed leaves with the segments directed backward; pinnatifid, with the lobes convex before and straight behind, pointing backward, like the teeth of a doule saw, as in the dandelion leaf.

RYB : red, yellow, blue; see RYB color model;

RYB color model : a subtractive color model in which red, yellow, and blue are primary colors; in it, green is a mixture of blue and yellow, yellow is the complement of violet and orange is the complement of blue. Nowadays it is known that RYB model generates rather incomplete gamut, but it continues to be in common use in art, in spite of the CMY model success.
