Dominican
monastery in Bol, Croatia, on the small
peninsula Glavica, is now 534 years of age but, of course,
its present appearance is not of that age. And talking about
appearance, one of the best views of the monastery is from our
terrace on Grabov Rat. So far I took dozens of photos of the
monastery in various sun, moon and sea realities and mirages. And
what I don’t like on them is that most south building, the
Dominican seminary, an ugly building of non-dalmatian appearance.
Here comes my interest on when the building was added to the setup.
According
to the 500th memorial of the monastery [Spomenica dominikanskog
samostana u Bolu, 1475-1975], all building additions were
concluded by 1883 and only an extensive plastering and roofing was
done from 1963 to 1970. In the same Spomenica there is a
black&white photo of the monastery (taken from Grabov Rat
!, see the top image on the right) without the seminary building.
The photo is not dated, just captioned as "an old
photograph", but it is obviously taken before 1883. I’ve took
a photo (see the bottom image on the right) roughly from the same
spot the old photo was taken. |
